What are Need Based Grants?

Need based grants are grants that are awarded to those with special needs. These grants are take into consideration an applicants family’s income, family’s expected contribution, family’s size, and current student status.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FASFA is the first application you should submit to see whether you qualify for financial aid. This is usually the most widely distributed channel for students to receive funds to attend college.

 

 

Pell Grant

A mixture of work studies, loans, and grants the Pell Grant is another alternative students in need can turn to. The amount of money that a student can receive can vary up to the maximum of $5000.


 

 

 

Education Exchange College Grant Program

The ACCEL/EXCHANGE has been helping its members financial organizations contribute to the community through the Education Exchange College Grant program since 1994. The program awards up to $50,000 in scholarships to eligible high school seniors each year. Its goal is to honor, recognize, and assist hardworking and academically talented students as they further their education.

The Walmart Foundation

The Gerber Foundation

The Gerber Foundation has two competitive scholarships for students in West Michigan. The Daniel Gerber, Sr. Medallion Scholarship is available to students graduating from one of the five school districts in Newaygo County, Michigan. National Association of Black Journalists

The NABJ Bryan Monroe Memorial Scholarship Program

What you need to know:

$5,000 awarded to undergrads and graduates with at least a full year left, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and have a NABJ student member in good standing.

How to apply:

Submit a 300-word essay on why you want to begin a career as a Newsroom Manager, 2 recommendation letters, 50-word statement on how the scholarship will help with your academic career, two pieces of published work or work that has been broadcasted by a media outlet, and your official college transcript.

2022 NABJ Visual Task Force Scholarship

What you need to know:

$3,000 awarded to high school juniors and seniors/full-time college undergraduates and graduates with at least one full year left and at least 3.0 GPA. You must be a NABJ student member in good standing.

How to apply:

Application Deadline: Midnight PT on February 28, 2022/3 AM Eastern

 

 

 

2022 NABJ Facebook Journalism Project Scholarship

$10,000 is awarded to college undergraduates and graduates with at least one full year left and at least a 3.0 GPA. You must be an NABJ student member in good standing.

$2,000 is awarded for digital books, gear, and supplies.

2022 NABJ Scholarships

$2,500 is awarded to 25 college undergraduates and graduates with at least one full year left and at least a 3.0 GPA. You must be an NABJ student member in good standing.

2022 NABJ-Moneta Sleet III Scholarship

$2,500 is awarded to a college undergraduate or graduate with at least one full year left and at least a 3.0 GPA. You must be an NABJ student member in good standing.

2022 NABJ-Larry Whiteside Scholarship

$5,000 is awarded to a college undergraduate or graduate with at least one full year left and at least a 3.0 GPA. You must be an NABJ student member in good standing and be pursuing a career in sports journalism.

Furthermore, you will receive a free trip to Las Vegas, Nevada where the 2022 NABJ Convention & Career Fair will be held between August 3-7.

Meals, room and board, registration, and a roundtrip flight will be covered by a stipend.

You will be recognized at the Sports Task Force event. You will, also, have to write an account of your experience.

Moreover, you will have a job as the new Sports Task Force student reporter for their website and social media channels.

How to apply:

Apply along with an essay discussing what inspires you to become a sports journalist.

2022 NABJ-Acel Moore Scholarships

$3,000 is awarded to 2 college undergraduates or graduates with at least one full year left and at least a 3.0 GPA. You must be an NABJ student member in good standing.
